10 Korean Serums Worth the Hype
We tested dozens of K-beauty serums over 18 months. These 10 actually delivered on their promises, from hydration to brightening to acne control.
The K-beauty serum market is overwhelming. Walk into any Olive Young store in Seoul (or scroll through their website) and you’ll find hundreds of serums promising glass skin, poreless perfection, and a dewy glow that could stop traffic.
Most of them are fine. Some are incredible. A few are genuinely life-changing for the right skin type.
Over the past 18 months, our team has tested over 40 Korean serums across different skin types (oily, dry, combination, sensitive, acne-prone). These 10 earned permanent spots in our routines. Not because of marketing. Because we saw real results.
How We Tested
Each serum was used by at least two team members for a minimum of 6 weeks (two full skin cell turnover cycles). We evaluated based on:
- Visible results (hydration, texture, brightness, breakouts)
- Texture and absorption (how it feels going on, how quickly it sinks in)
- Ingredient quality (we checked every formula against research databases)
- Value (price per ml relative to performance)
No brand sent us free products. We bought everything ourselves.
1. COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
Key ingredients. 96% snail secretion filtrate.
What it does. Hydrates, soothes, repairs. This is the Swiss Army knife of K-beauty.
We were skeptical about putting snail mucin on our faces. Genuinely. But within two weeks of daily use, the results were hard to deny. Skin felt plumper, small blemishes healed faster, and dry patches disappeared.
The texture is slightly viscous and stretchy (yes, like you’d imagine snail mucin would feel). It absorbs cleanly without stickiness.
For a soothing alternative with similar repair properties, we tested the Abib Jericho Rose Bifida Serum and were impressed by how well it calmed reactive skin while delivering lasting hydration.
Best for. All skin types, but especially dehydrated, irritated, or post-blemish skin.
Our take. If you buy one K-beauty serum, make it this one. We have a full deep-dive on snail mucin if you want to understand the science.
2. Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide
Key ingredients. Propolis extract (60%), niacinamide (2%).
What it does. Brightens, reduces redness, controls oil, strengthens the moisture barrier.
This serum has a honey-like color and a slightly thicker texture that feels nourishing without heaviness. The propolis (a resinous substance bees make to protect their hives) has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
After 6 weeks of nightly use, our combination-skin tester noticed reduced pore appearance and a more even skin tone. The acne-prone tester saw fewer inflammatory breakouts.
If brightening and dark spot correction are your main goals, the Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Dark Spot Correcting Serum is another niacinamide-forward option worth trying. The higher concentration paired with tranexamic acid makes it particularly effective for stubborn hyperpigmentation.
Best for. Oily, combination, and acne-prone skin.
Our take. Exceptional value. This punches well above its price point.
3. Torriden DIVE-IN Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Key ingredients. 5 types of hyaluronic acid at different molecular weights, panthenol.
What it does. Deep hydration at multiple layers of the skin.
The multi-weight hyaluronic acid approach is clever. High molecular weight HA sits on the surface and prevents moisture loss. Low molecular weight HA penetrates deeper to hydrate from within. This serum does both.
The texture is watery and absorbs almost instantly. No tackiness, no residue. It layers beautifully under other products.
Best for. Dehydrated skin of all types, especially in dry climates or winter.
Our take. Our dry-skin tester called this “the best hyaluronic acid serum at any price.” Considering it costs a fraction of most Western HA serums, that’s saying something.
4. COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid
Key ingredients. Betaine salicylate (4%, gentler BHA alternative), willow bark water.
What it does. Exfoliates inside pores, reduces blackheads, controls sebum.
This isn’t technically a serum, but it’s used in the serum/treatment step of the routine. The betaine salicylate is a gentler form of BHA that delivers the pore-clearing benefits of salicylic acid with less irritation potential.
We used this 3 times per week (not daily). After one month, blackheads across the nose and chin were visibly reduced. After two months, pores looked noticeably smaller.
Best for. Oily and acne-prone skin with blackhead concerns.
Our take. The gentle formulation makes this accessible to sensitive skin types who can’t tolerate traditional salicylic acid products.
5. Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop
Key ingredients. Ascorbic acid (5%), Centella asiatica extract.
What it does. Brightens, fades dark spots, provides antioxidant protection.
The 5% ascorbic acid concentration is intentionally modest. Many Western vitamin C serums pack 15 to 20%, which can cause irritation and oxidation issues. Klairs’ approach is typical K-beauty: effective but gentle.
The texture is slightly oily, which is unusual for a vitamin C serum. It plays nicely with other hydrating layers. No stinging on application, even on sensitive areas.
Best for. All skin types looking for brightening without irritation. Great for vitamin C beginners.
Our take. Won’t deliver dramatic results as fast as a high-concentration L-ascorbic acid serum, but it’s far more pleasant to use daily and builds results steadily over time.
6. Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum: Ginseng + Snail Mucin
Key ingredients. Ginseng root water (30%), snail secretion filtrate (3%).
What it does. Anti-aging, firming, hydrating. Ginseng has been used in Korean medicine for centuries, and modern research supports its antioxidant and anti-wrinkle properties.
This serum has a golden tint and a slightly herbal scent that fades quickly. It feels luxurious going on. Our tester with mature skin (early 40s) reported visibly firmer, more elastic skin after 8 weeks. Fine lines around the eyes appeared softer.
Best for. Mature, dull, or tired-looking skin.
Our take. The combination of ginseng and snail mucin is uniquely Korean and uniquely effective. Feels like a traditional herbal remedy in a modern formula.
7. SOME BY MI AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Serum
Key ingredients. AHA, BHA, PHA, tea tree, niacinamide, Centella asiatica.
What it does. Multi-acid exfoliation with soothing agents. Targets acne, texture, and tone simultaneously.
The “miracle” branding is bold, but this serum genuinely improved our acne-prone tester’s skin within the 30-day window. The combination of all three acid types (AHA for surface, BHA for pores, PHA for gentle overall renewal) covers more ground than single-acid products.
The inclusion of Centella and tea tree prevents the irritation that triple-acid formulas could otherwise cause.
Best for. Acne-prone skin with texture concerns. Not for sensitive or very dry skin.
Our take. Use this 2 to 3 times per week, not daily. It’s effective, but respect it.
8. Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Toner
Key ingredients. 50% hyaluronic acid complex, panthenol, allantoin.
What it does. Intense hydration in a toner-serum hybrid format.
Yes, it’s labeled as a toner, but the hyaluronic acid concentration puts it firmly in serum territory. It’s a workhorse hydration product that can be layered multiple times (the 7-skin method was practically invented for products like this).
Texture is slightly thicker than water. No fragrance, no irritants. It’s boring in the best possible way.
Best for. Every skin type, year-round. Especially effective as a base layer in the 7-skin method.
Our take. Not glamorous, but possibly the most reliable hydration product we’ve ever used.
9. COSRX Propolis Light Ampoule
Key ingredients. Propolis extract (83.25%), honey extract.
What it does. Soothes, heals, strengthens the moisture barrier. Particularly effective for calming irritated or post-breakout skin.
The honey-golden liquid smells faintly sweet and absorbs into the skin with a subtle glow. After inflammatory breakouts, this ampoule noticeably sped up healing time. Red marks that usually lingered for weeks faded faster.
Best for. Irritated, post-breakout, or stressed skin.
Our take. Our go-to when skin is having a bad week. Think of it as a recovery serum.
10. Purito Centella Green Level Buffet Serum
Key ingredients. Centella asiatica (49%), niacinamide (4%), peptides, hyaluronic acid.
What it does. Calms, strengthens, hydrates. The “buffet” name references the multi-ingredient approach.
Centella asiatica (also called cica or tiger grass) is one of the most-studied soothing ingredients in Korean skincare. Combined with niacinamide and peptides, this serum addresses multiple concerns without overwhelming the skin.
Lightweight, fragrance-free, absorbs instantly. Our sensitive-skin tester used it for 8 weeks and reported significantly less redness and reactivity.
Best for. Sensitive, reactive, or redness-prone skin.
Our take. If your skin is easily upset by new products, start here. It’s gentle enough to earn trust.
How to Choose
With 10 options, the question is: which one is right for you?
If your skin is dehydrated. Start with Torriden DIVE-IN or Isntree HA Toner.
If you want an all-rounder. COSRX Snail 96 Mucin is the universal answer.
If you’re fighting acne. COSRX BHA Power Liquid + Beauty of Joseon Propolis + Niacinamide. Check out our K-beauty products for acne guide for a complete routine.
If you want anti-aging. Beauty of Joseon Ginseng + Snail Mucin + Klairs Vitamin Drop.
If your skin is sensitive and reactive. Purito Centella Buffet Serum, full stop. The Anua Heartleaf 80% Moisture Soothing Ampoule is another gentle option that works well for calming irritation without overwhelming sensitive skin.
Layering Tips
When using multiple serums (we typically use 1 to 2 per night):
- Apply thinnest consistency first, thickest last
- Wait 30 seconds between layers for absorption
- Don’t mix actives that conflict (retinol + direct acids on the same night)
- Pat, don’t rub. Let the product absorb into the skin rather than spreading it around
